Dr. Laura Hendrickson
I Know God Reigns In The Storm

Welcome To My Website
The Bible teaches that we experience many storms as we live the Christian life (Acts 14:23). What a comfort, then, to know that God is sovereign even over our trials. He's allowed them into our lives for good, and He is faithful to strengthen us to meet them by the power of His Holy Spirit.

I've faced many storms in my own life, but God's taught me precious lessons as I walked with him through abuse, struggled for a time with depression and bipolar, survived life-threatening cancer, and raised a son with autism. Now it's my privilege to share with you what I've learned from these storms through my ministry of biblical counseling, writing, and speaking. The resources you'll find here will support and encourage you as you face your own challenges through Christ's awesome power (Philippians 4:13).

You can access my blog by clicking the navigation button at the top of any of my website pages, or directly at blog.drlaurahendrickson.com. I'm blogging about how we can respond in faith to the storms in our lives. The Gospel is balm that penetrates to the deepest and most secret places in our hearts, healing our deepest hurts. We don't need to be afraid to ask hard questions like, "Where was God?" or "Why did the Lord allow that to happen to me?" because as we ask, God will answer in love. As we openly acknowledge our hurts to Him, He heals them.

Completed 2010 Projects:

Women Counseling Women
and Making Sense Of Autism

If you haven't in a while, please check my books page to find links to purchase a newly released DVD on autism from Joni and Friends that contains an interview I did last year at JAF headquarters, and a women's counseling anthology, Women Counseling Women, edited by Elyse Fitzpatrick. I contributed two chapters to this valuable anthology, "About Medicines," and "But, My Child Is Different!"

New Projects For 2010-11:

Beyond Suffering: Viewpoints Of Christian Disability Ministry

I've contributed a position paper on autism for a curriculum that Joni and Friends will be releasing soon, entitled Beyond Suffering: Viewpoints of Christian Disability Ministry. There is no exact release date yet, because the publication has been postponed due to Joni's recent diagnosis with cancer, but I hope to have more updated information on its progress soon. This valuable curriculum will be used in Bible colleges and seminaries to train future ministers and Christian workers to better serve people with a variety of disabilities. I'll display an image and a link once it's available for purchase.

DivorceCare and Griefshare
I've also recently completed interviews about single parenting for an update of Church Initiative's popular Divorcecare and Griefshare curriculums, which are used in many churches throughout the country. When I have information about availability about this fabulous new resource, which will feature interviews by many gifted counselors, I'll let you know.

Counseling The Hard Cases
I'm also currently working on a chapter on counseling women affected by sexual abuse for a new counseling anthology, Counseling The Hard Cases, edited by Dr. Stuart Scott and Dr. Heath Lambert, both of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, to be published by Broadman and Holman Publishers in 2011. Please pray for wisdom in writing for my coauthors and me as we work on this. When an exact publication date is available, I'll let you know.

One More New Project...

Gospel Balm: Lessons on Trusting God From A Turbulent Life
Please pray for wisdom as I begin work on a new book of my own, with the working title of Gospel Balm: Lessons On Trusting God From A Turbulent Life. It will be about looking to the Lord in faith through the storms of life. I'm looking forward to condensing into book form all the lessons the Lord taught me about His faithfulness from my experiences with surviving abuse, cancer, and life with a child with autism. His grace truly is sufficient!

And A Recommended Resource:

Life In The Balance: Biblical Answers For Issues Of Our Day
I've recently learned that Joni Eareckson Tada has a new book, Bible study and companion DVD: Life In The Balance: Biblical Answers For Issues Of Our Day, due for release at the end of July, 2010 from Regal Books. This resource set features my interview about autism with Steve Bundy, director of Joni And Friends International Disability Ministry, on the DVD. The book includes a chapter on autism, as well, and features my book, Finding Your Child's Way On The Autism Spectrum as a recommended resource. The Bible study leader's guide even quotes my son, Eric! I'm blessed to know that, through Joni's worldwide ministry, so many Christians will be able to learn more about how to help their brothers and sisters in Christ who are affected by this challenging disorder, and I'm proud to be a part of their efforts to make a difference.

God Reigns in the Storm

by Steve and Vikki Cook

There’s a tempest that can flood the soul

When troubles pound like crashing waves,

In these afflictions I have realized

There’s a place that I can hide.

I know that God has promised me his strength

And His Word can never fail;

He is faithful, O so faithful.

There are Sovereign Hands

Holding all my days,

Yes, I know God reigns in the storm.

Every trial and pain

Wisdom has ordained,

Yes, I know God reigns in the storm--

In the storm.

There’s a midnight that can fill the soul

When the darkness knows no end,

And though it feels like I am all alone

There’s a truth that gives me hope.

I know the One who's counted all my tears

And He is nearer than my breath;

He is with me, always with me.

There are Sovereign Hands

Holding all my days,

Yes, I know God reigns in the storm.

Every trial and pain

Wisdom has ordained,

Yes, I know God reigns in the storm.

There’s so many things that I don’t understand,

But I know His every plan for me is good--

So good.

There are Sovereign Hands

Holding all my days,

Yes, I know God reigns in the storm.

Every trial and pain

Wisdom has ordained,

Yes, I know God reigns in the storm--

He reigns.
